HISTORY

club badge

In the year 1888 some of the residents of Lauder founded the Bowling Club and it has always been on the same site. The only changes to the bowling club over the past 114 years would appear to be the modernisation of the actual clubhouse itself. This includes disabled access to the clubhouse and surrounds. Unfortunately at present there is no disabled access to the green but this is to be rectified in the near future.

The dimensions of the green are 38m x 41m and it allows 7 rinks to played at any one time. It was last returfed approximately 58 years ago using Solway Seawash Turf (so I was informed by the Greenkeeper/Ranger Jock Broomfield - who intimated that it was laid just before he was born and he claims to be 56??).

It would appear(from reading the prizewinners boards) that women were not allowed as playing members of the Bowling Club until 1949 (when the 1st Ladies Champion was Mrs Mary Landells) and the ladies have been an important part of the club ever since.

The club is affiliated to the Scottish Bowling Association

We have both Mens and Ladies teams which participate in their respective Border Leagues. The men are currently in Division 2 and the women compete in the only Division. The club also has a very active old codgers (sorry - seniors section).Four of them recently competed in a local tournament and their combined age was about 300 years. The youngest of the had just retired having reached the age of 65. The oldest is in his early 80's and has been a member of the club for over 50 years. He has reached the club championship singles final on numerous occasions but has never won it. Where on the other hand the local Schoolmaster namely D.W. Harvey won his first title in the 1920's and won his last some 51 years later in the 1970's so there is hope yet.

As a club we hold a number of open competitions throughout the season. (I will post a list of next season's fixtures in this site in due course.) Therfore if anyone looking at this would like to come and compete you would be more than welcome. Also if any club would like to come and play a friendly we would guarantee you a very enjoyable day/night.

To any non-bowlers out there we are always on the look out for new members (of any age)

You can contact us either by phone, e-mail or snail mail.
